Homemade Deodorant Recipe without Baking Soda (it works!)
Ready to get rid of your store-bought, aluminum based deodorant? This is the perfect natural deodorant recipe that DOES NOT contain baking soda! I️ don’t have issues with baking soda in DIY recipes, but personally, it irritates my skin. I️ developed this recipe by modifying some other recipes I️ found online. I️ can promise that it works for men and women or however you identify! My Husband and I️ can’t imagine going back after using this recipe!
Why baking soda free?
Baking soda is the main ingredient in a lot of natural deodorant recipes. This is the deodorizing ingredient. The problem is, a lot of people find baking soda to be irritating, me being one of them! I️ tried probably every available natural deodorant on the market before realizing that my irritated armpits were due to the baking soda. When I️ switched to a store-bought baking soda free deodorant, I️ had the ah-ha moment!
Lesson learned! I won’t use baking soda deodorant again! After realizing that there aren’t a lot of natural deodorant recipes out there that don’t include this ingredient, I️ developed my own.
Transitioning to natural deodorant
Be patient! If you have been using deodorant with aluminum as the active ingredient, the process to ween off the stuff takes time and some confidence. YOU WILL BE STINKY! You might even be stinkier than you would expect.
Listen… this is normal. Your skin is a sponge, and you have been feeding it aluminum for a long time, daily. You can’t expect to go cold turkey and have your body willingly allow you to!
My suggestion is apply natural deodorant and just endure the transition or slowly reduce the amount of aluminum you expose yourself to. Start with switching between natural and aluminum
Non toxic ingredients
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is commonly used in cosmetics because it is great for your skin. Coconut oil is comedogenic, which means it clogs pores. Not great for your face, but useful for a deodorant!
Where to buy: amazon or your local grocery store!
Shea Butter
Shea butter is great for the skin! It is so nourishing, I️ use raw shea butter on my skin as lotion. It is also a hard butter, which helps with making sure the deodorant is firm.
Where to buy: amazon or your local ethnic hair store
Beeswax
Beeswax is great for creating a moisture barrier in this deodorant. There I️sn’t a lot that it would feel icky as beeswax might make diy products feel.. It is the perfect amount to be effective. If you are vegan, an alternative is candelilla wax.
Where to buy: amazon or whole foods
Castor Oil
Castor oil is known for being very kind to hair follicles. Research has shown that castor oil is beneficial for helping hair grow. Listen… You want your armpit hair to grow. It is healthy for your follicles to allow it to.
Where to buy: amazon or whole foods
Arrowroot powder
This is your drying agent. It balances the oils to give you a cream deodorant finish. A good, cheaper alternative is cornstarch. If you have it, use it! I️ personally use arrowroot but they essentially do the same thing. There are some people who are allergic to cornstarch.
Where to buy: amazon , this website, or your local bulk store
Essential Oils
Fragrances from conventional deodorant can be very harmful. Essential oils will help keep you smelling fresh! The best part is that you can choose what you want to smell like. I️ prefer a combination of lavender and tea tree. Gives me a little tingle! My fiance loves using lemongrass for his.
Where to buy: Don’t buy on amazon. those are diluted. Whole foods, or this website.
Directions
Baking Soda Free Natural Deodorant Recipe:
Coconut Oil - 2 tbs
Shea Butter - 2 tbs
Beeswax - 1 tbs
Castor Oil - 3 drops
Arrowroot Powder - 4 tbs
Essential Oils (I️ like lavender + tea tree) - 40 drops or more depending on how strong you want your deodorant.
Directions
Step 1: Combine and heat coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter and castor oil in a heat safe container until oil is clear and completely melted. I️ use a glass pyrex measuring cup and pop it in the microwave. You can heat it via double boiler.
Step 2: Add the arrowroot powder and mix well. You want the powder to melt completely. You may end up with a grainy texture if it is not melted through (it still works) but creamy feels better!
Step 3: Let the mixture cool down just a bit while mixing then add the essential oils.
Step 4: Pout into your container of choice. I️ use an old deodorant stick container for my Fiance and a repurposed glass container for myself.
Step 5: Let it sit for 24 hours or overnight and use! You can pop it in the fridge to make it firm up faster.
For best results, use within 3-4 months.
